CHARCOAL, 2014-16

Hands and footprints mark the surface. Music, drawing, absorbing, and reacting. Extension of lines from my mind to my body, to my arm, to my hand, to the paper. I fell in love with charcoal; it covered my hands and stained them for days.

Carbon, used for mark making in the form of charcoal, is the earliest pigment created by humans, found in Chinese inks, frescos, and cave paintings. Carbon cycles in the Earth and combines with other elements to form the structure of all living things, thus being instrumental in their creation.
